Facet Mug
Facet Mug
A round interior with sliced, geometric exterior.
Perhaps my favourite mug that I have made to date: the Facet Mug.
These mugs are thrown thickly on the wheel before drying for a few hours. Once they’ve firmed up a little (to what potters call the “leather hard” stage) I slice the sides off with a potato peeler to create the faceted sides, ensuring that the weight of the cup becomes more proportionate to the size. The mugs end up being 8-sided, with the hexagon visible at the lip when viewed from above, sitting nicely around the circular interior. The handle is then attached and carved away at with the peeler to create an ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing functional mug. I don’t measure while slicing anything - I work by eye and some sides receive extra slices, resulting in an organic-ness within this structured form.
Wheel thrown Australian stoneware, available in a variety of glazes including my current recycle batch glaze: a serendipitous earthy green with beautiful flecks of brown and blue through it.
